Director's Note

Dear PMT Family and Friends,

My name is Brady D. Patsy and I am the Conservatory Directory of the Richard E. Rauh Conservatory at Pittsburgh Musical Theater, and the Director of Chicago The Musical. Set in Jazz-age Chicago, the musical is based on a 1926 play of the same name by reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins about actual criminals and crimes she reported on. The story is a satire on corruption in the administration of criminal justice and the concept of the “celebrity criminal.”

This is the first show I have directed with the PMT Teens since directing RENT in 2016, and I am very excited to be working with them again. I always enjoy doing time period pieces with the students to expose them to a completely different era. Introducing them to the roaring 20’s, jazz, vaudeville, and the affect of the media in the criminal justice system has been a journey as we discover the differences and similarities in today’s society.

Through this production, we have also had the opportunity to study the genius of the show’s creators, Frank Ebb and John Kander - writers of other Broadway hits such as Cabaret, Kiss of the Spiderwoman, Curtains, and many others. Let’s not neglect to mention, Chicago would be nothing without that iconic Bob Fosse choreography.

I hope that you enjoy the show as much as I have enjoyed working with the many talented students. In the words of Velma Kelly, “I can’t do it alone,” and am very proud of their efforts and dedication to the show.

KATE QUEEN-TOOLE (Controller) has a B.A. in Communication/Theater, a B.S.B.A in Accounting, and an M.S. in Instructional Leadership from Robert Morris University. She has had the distinct pleasure of appearing in so many wonderful PMT productions since moving to Pittsburgh in 2007. Some of her favorite moments onstage with PMT include Maria in West Side Story, Wendla in Spring Awakening, and Jane in Tarzan. She is thrilled to be working with the students of PMT as an educator and resident artist. Kate values the mentorship and education she received from the many brilliant teachers and performers she’s had the opportunity to study under throughout her life; she is thrilled to join the ranks of PMT’s staff and become an active part of the development of many more brilliantly talented performers!

JONATHAN SAGE (Technical Director) has been with Pittsburgh Musical Theater for more than ten years and is excited to be part of another fabulous production. A Michigan State University alumnus, additional professional credits include The Boarshead Professional Theater in Lansing, Michigan and The Ohio Light Opera in Wooster, Ohio. Jonathan would like to thank his family for all of their love and support.
