Dear PMT Friends,
It has been a true privilege to direct In The Heights. Although written over a decade ago, this piece seems even more timely now. While the story encapsulates a tiny, specific community in New York City called Washington Heights, it represents the much broader and greater ideal of the American Dream. The neighborhood within this show depicts a collective of people from many different ethnic backgrounds who have immigrated and made a home on a particular block in NYC. Consequently, the characters have also formed a community that supports each other as they all aspire to work toward building the best possible lives for themselves and their loved ones.
The show follows a handful of storylines, each illustrating what it means for the characters to chase opportunity in an attempt to improve their life circumstances, without losing a sense of the cultures they came from. Each of the storylines portray the successes, setbacks, and surprises of pursuing one’s dreams. In The Heights uniquely represents the beauty within the struggle of all who seek a better life, which I believe we should all have an equal opportunity to pursue. I hope you enjoy the journey of this incredibly special show!
